Fieldbus

Fieldbus

In the early 1990's, vendor specific fieldbus I/O systems allowed field I/O to connect to the controller through a single cable system simplifying wiring but was limited in offering. In the mid 1990's, Wago launched the independent fieldbus I/O systems revolutionizing the automation remote I/O industry replacing discrete wiring in junction boxes and rack based I/O systems with a fieldbus coupler module and multi-channel discrete and analog modules. This new I/O system forced many leading industrial I/O manufacturers to create open standards allowing 3rd party vendors to develop products and connect with these platforms allowing terminations much closer to the field devices. With protocols like EtherCat, EtherNetIP, Profinet, Profibus, and Modbus, the modularity and flexibility to mix and match I/O types, voltages, safety, and communications has made these I/O Systems the choice of many new machine installations. Building Automation also enjoys protocols like BacNet, and Lonworks, where a popular in-vehicle bus is CanOpen.
